Magazine cover image © 2003 Sandy Hershelman Venus Rising from the Sea originally
appeared in Chicago, at the World's Columbian Exhibition of 1893. (The
name of the original
artist has been lost.) Theodore N. Haller gave a replica of the statue
to the city of Port Townsend, Washington, in 1906. “Haller Fountain” or “Galatea,” as
she is known locally, was produced by the J.L. Mott foundry in New York — and
ordered from a catalog. The damaged and aging statue was recast by Port
Townsend artists Mark Stevenson and David Eisenhour and reinstalled in
1993. |
